Another Day, Another Blog Reboot

Please everyone behave responsibly when working or recreating outdoors. COVID19 will add another layer of complexity to responding to incidents this season. Let’s not put our first responders in more danger than they already are on fires.
So, here we are at Day Who The Hell Knows of COVID19 stay at home orders and fire season is on our doorstep.

Since the last blog post, I have become a Technical Specialist and PIOFt with the U.S. Forest Service, in addition to all the stuff I was doing before. This season will be interesting, as much of the work is remote, due to the pandemic. Since I have been VOSTing for 10 years, now, and telecommuted for my IT analyst position for 10 of my 18 years, remote work is nothing new but the choice of tools is no longer mine and, of course, neither are my responsibilities. So there's quite the learning curve this year.

The other new thing that you will see on this site is my artwork, which you can find here (collage) and here (illustration).

I continue my work with Field Innovation Team, the Santa Fe Fireshed Coalition, Santa Fe SAR.

Let's stay safe this summer!

National Engagement for NIMS Implementation Objectives

1/18/2018

The Federal Emergency Management Agency’s National Integration Center is seeking public feedback for an update to the National Incident Management System (NIMS) Implementation Objectives for State, Local, Tribal and Territorial (SLTT) organizations and jurisdictions. https://www.fema.gov/media-library/assets/documents/130743 It was last revised in 2009.

This National Engagement Period opened January 16, 2018, and will close at 5:00 p.m. Eastern on Monday, February 5, 2018. This is for interested parties to comment on the draft implementation objectives to ensure they are relevant for all partners.
NIMS is a key component of incident management, enabling diverse organizations to work together during incidents of all kinds and sizes. Implementing NIMS across the nation is a central part of building our national preparedness.

This revision ensures changes to the SLTT Implementation Objectives are consistent with the Third Edition of NIMS. Changes incorporate stakeholder input and make NIMS a clearer and more useful tool for implementation.

FEMA will host three webinars to discuss the proposed changes and answer related questions. See the FEMA website https://www.fema.gov/media-library/assets/documents/130743  for more information on the webinars and to review the draft. To provide comments on the draft, complete the feedback form and submit it to FEMA-NIMS@fema.dhs.gov.

Using Technology to Engage Adolescents in Peacebuilding in the Middle East
Join DME for Peace on Thursday, August 10th at 10:00am EDT as we welcome members of the Gender and Adolescence: Global Evidence Consortium to the M&E Thursday Talks to lead a discussion on “Using Technology to Engage Adolescents in Peacebuilding.” Adolescents in conflict-affected contexts are increasingly recognised as key actors in peacebuilding and conflict resolution processes. How can we help young people to build a sustainable and gender responsive peace by involving them in research and programs that are tailored to their capabilities and preferred change mechanisms? In this webinar, program implementers and researchers working with, and for, male and female adolescents and youth will share their experiences of using new technologies to help gather and share evidence on adolescent well-being and facilitate peacebuilding processes in conflict affected communities. During the webinar, members of the GAGE Consortium will share insights on best practices and the research ethics of using new technology-based research, programming and communication tools with and for adolescents which have potential for empowerment and tackling restrictive gender norms.

    re: this blog

    My main interests are:
    - communication and society, especially as related to technology and media;
    -technology for good;
    -social good; and
    -emergency public information

    I will share articles of interest from various media sources, as well as my own blog posts.

    Don't be surprised, however, to see the occasional foodie post or absurdity of the day - blogs should always allow some room for general interest and ranting.
